As predicted, Oscar Pistorius has been granted bail.
Magistrate Desmond Nair said the state had problems with its investigation and had not offered enough proof to keep Pistorius jailed.
“I come to the conclusion that the accused has made a case to be released on bail,” Nair said, eliciting a celebratory cry of “Yes!” from the courtroom.
Maybe he is innocent in South African terms. Maybe shooting through a door at someone in the dark is what a reasonable man does. Maybe Reeva Steenkamps life ended in a tragic accident, unavoidable when the legacy of Apartheid and present inequality bring permanent war into the home.
The prosecution is looking like the Keystone Cops. They may be to Oscar Pistorius what Mark Fuhrman was to O.J. Simpson– someone so discrediting to the prosecution that the case falls apart.
