Yesterday we celebrated Independence Day, honoring a new nation free of the oppressive rule of a far-off royalty.
Even now, in the 21st Century, the ancient structures are encoded in our language and culture. Today’s card, the VI of Pentacles, illustrates the subjugation of the poor, and the privilege of charity.
We may have almost 250 years of democracy but the story of our nation includes a constant struggle for equality. Women’s right to vote is not even a century old. We still consider some of our people to be suited only to kneel and beg. If that were not so, would we tolerate unequal education and leave large cities to the mercy of shifting economics and natural disasters?
Take this card as a symbol of the class bias we like to deny and the assumptions we have to dismantle.
