2 of pentacles

Today’s card is the II of Pentacles, a card of shifting priorities and uncertainty.

Democratic Underground reports that hospitals are doing better since the Affordable Care Act. I’m thinking that here in Rhode Island getting insurance for everyone could help keep small hospitals like Westerly and Woonsocket up and running so that if you have a heart attack out in the corner of the state you have emergency care close by.

There is a New Age saying that money is only a form of energy. Often said by self-appointed spiritual leaders charging big bucks for their seminars. No, if you’ve ever been seriously short of money when it counted you know that money is very earthly and unforgiving.

But money is a medium of exchange that we collectively create and reinforce. It works so well in so much of our daily interaction that it can seem like a force of nature, not a convention agreed on by society. And the money economy works so well so much of the time that it crowds out other economies.

I’ll be driving down Warwick Avenue this morning, past 2 chain pharmacies and 2 chain supermarkets across the street from each other. Meanwhile, the independent pharmacies that served the neighborhoods have been driven out of business and when was the last time you saw a produce market? Unwisdom.

I first heard the term, ‘Solidarity Economy’ at Occupy Providence, and since then have been looking at all the non-money economies that keep the world going.

The Bible is often misquoted as saying money is the root of all evil, but the actual verse says,

1 Timothy 6:10King James Version (KJV)
10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

Misplaced love, greed, error and ending in sorrow.

Don’t know why this is on my mind today, but it’s stormy weather and tough navigating.

  1. Mary Callahan says:

I can really appreciate what you say here. It’s not the money that’s evil but rather what we chose to do with it that matters. I too am looking for unconventional ways to pay my way. I wish there were more bartering arenas; it would allow more folks into economic prosperity.
